A Christmas Meaning – 2021

John Lennon’s lyrics filled my heart today as I gazed out the restaurant window to see the hectic holiday scene outside … cars racing about parking lots, people in hurried motion and trains going on through.

And so, this is Christmas, and what have you done? Happy Xmas (War is Over) by J.Lennon

I was resigned to turn away from all this ‘sound and fury’, when I noticed some solitary maple trees, right in front of me. Void of leaves now, they were impressive in their calm, unchanging nature … like silent observers against the busy background. For me, the missing leaves are our memories lost.

What will we remember of our life many years from now? I believe it will be the faces of people who really made a difference – the laughter, the love!

But of all these friends and lovers, there is no one compares with you.                                                                                     – In My Life by The Beatles

The truth for many of us though, is that we worry about things as if they matter, when they don’t. Yet, is there anyone who can’t recount some joy at Christmas and those moments of joy that we might have left? Is there any reason not to expect another miracle again this year? Does it not start and end in a spirit of caring and giving?

You want to save humanity, but it’s people that you just can’t stand.                                                                                          – I Don’t Wanna Face it by John Lennon

With just one positive contribution, to serve one another each week we will all be in an entirely new place by this time next Christmas. It’s the best gift we can give to others and to ourselves – you just can’t lose!

Yet, on a recent radio poll, it was 50/50 – thumbs up or thumbs down – on whether or not Christmas would still mean something to people.  And this is what I don’t get it. Yes, it’s true we still are dealing with COVID-19, but if your living in a first-world country, this doesn’t apply to you. With 80% of the general population now vaccinated, we’re in a much better position to shield ourselves. Most third-world countries are lucky to have 8% of their population vaccinated!

We should be dancing in the streets with the return of the Christmas spirit Instead, some of us are free-falling during the pandemic. Yes, free to not choose vaccines – which granted is not 100% effective – that will prevent most of the serious consequences: like death or lifelong troubles with your health… often leading to other health complications.

But, It’s true there are other variants of concern that has lifted it’s  ugly head, but  and our families from being affected by it – with one, two, three vaccine / booster  shots we can take.

Isn’t that important? If you want it darker, try living with the uncertainty of a third-world country: where  the percentage of folks with these lifesaving drug barely breaks double digits percentage of the population – compared to over 80% where you are – if your reading this, live.

“A very Merry Christmas, and a happy New Year, Let’s hope it’s a good one, without any fear “
